Our Program
Our training program consists of seven courses. We prepare individuals for a job as a Sound Engineering Technician. You can work as a Studio Recording Engineer, Live Sound Mixer, or Music Producer. A student must complete
all seven courses to graduate. The links below give more information about each course.
AUDIO 101 – BASIC AUDIO TECHNIQUES
How to use microphones – how to pick the correct microphone for a particular application
Live band recording. How to position microphones correctly.
Signal routing and how the audio signal flows through the mixing board. Equalization and
how to equalize various instruments. How to record a band in the recording studio.
How to put a well balanced mix together.
AUDIO 101L – BASIC AUDIO LAB
This is a hands-on-equipment lab course – using various mixing boards and DAWs.
This lab course is taught using an individual, one-student-at-a-time method.
The student may come in at any time that is convenient for their lab session.
AUDIO 201 – ADVANCED AUDIO TECHNIQUES
This course covers advanced audio techniques. Topics include:
Computer hard disk recording, MIDI, computer plug-ins, effects and signal processors,
virtual synthesizers and samplers and how to use them.
AUDIO 201LL – ADVANCED LIVE MIXING
Students help set up, run sound, and tear down gear at different concerts
in and around San Antonio.
Some of the gigs will be at night clubs, some will be at outdoor festivals,
some will be running sound at a church,
and some will be private parties that have live entertainment.
Each “gig” will be about three hours long.
Your supervisor will evaluate your performance at each show.
AUDIO 201LS – ADVANCED MUSIC PRODUCTION
Each student will be issued a mobile recording rig:
a computer, an audio interface, a mic, a small MIDI controller keyboard.
The student takes this computer/recording rig home so that you will plenty of time
to master each software application that is installed.
MUSIC 101 – MUSIC THEORY CLASS
Students learn the basic music theory that is necessary for Sound Engineers and Music Producers.
Topics include: Musical Instruments – what they sound like,
Reading music / Playing Notes (student is issued a small musical keyboard),
Rhythm, Staffs, Half Steps / Whole Steps, Sharps / Flats, Intervals,
Key Signatures, Circle of Fifths, Scales, Chords and Chord Progressions.
MUSIC BUSINESS 101 – MONETIZING MUSIC
In this class, we will tell you just how the music business works and how money is made!
We cover how to earn royalties, how to license music, how publishing works,
how to protect yourself, and will familiarize you with the structure of the industry.
